Flügel Translations

I come from Nottingham, famous for Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest. Today, I live near an even larger area of woodland in Weil im Schönbuch, Germany. I’m at home in both countries and languages.

Studying German (BA Honours) at the University of Durham, including a year abroad at the Freie Universität Berlin on a German Academic Exchange Service scholarship, and completing a research MPhil in EFL at Sheffield Hallam University stood me in good stead linguistically and professionally for my later work as a translator.

People and language have always been the focus of my work:

First at the Language Centre of the University of Bayreuth, where I worked as a Lektorin for five years. That was followed by five years as a permanent employee at the Federal Foreign Office, initially as an English teacher and later as a translator in the in-house Language Services Division – until the government relocated to Berlin. I stayed in Bonn for personal reasons and worked as a translator in the Language Service of the Bundeskartellamt.

I’ve been a freelance translator since 2001. My customers include German ministries, courts, cultural institutes, theatres, archives, sports organisations and enterprises – from freelancers and SMEs to global companies.
